In
1962, the WHO and UNICEF sponsored an International Conference
at the University of Khazakhstan, Alma Ata. The
result of the conference was the Alma Ata Declaration:
“Health
for All by the year 2000”
This
declaration asked that a global strategy be developed for public
health using all curative methods available, both orthodox and traditional.
The
aims of The Open International University for Complementary
Medicines are:
1) To
advance the scientific study and the professional practice
of Complementary/Alternative Medicine by promoting and encouraging:
development and research, high professional ethics and standards,
education, and achievement amongst its practitioners.
2) To promote the knowledge and philosophy
of Complementary/Alternative Medicine through professional
journals, publications, workshops, and professional networking.
3) To promote
Complementary/Alternative Medicine by creating a strong public
knowledge and professional interest in the various modalities
of Complementary/ Alternative Medicine. This includes knowledge
of how these systems work for the integration into mainstream
medicine.
The Open
International University for Complementary Medicines was Founded
by the late Lord Pandit Prof. Dr. Sir Anton Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka.
More than eight years ago, a Trust was formed in the USA as a
Charity, for the continuation of The Open International University
for Complementary Medicines.
Upon the sudden passing of Prof. Anton on April 5, 2005, The
Trustees of The Open International University for Complementary
Medicines registered OIUCM in
California, as a Post Graduate University, to promote the integration
of medicines and to uphold the mandate of the Alma Ata 1962 Declaration.
Many Leaders in the field of Integrative Medicine will join together
at the New York World Congress as the New Structure of The Senate
of the Open International University for Complementary Medicines,
according to the wishes of Lord Pandit Prof. Dr. Sir Anton Jayasuriya.
